Studies in Transonic Flow I. Transonic Area Rule: Bodies,

Abstract

The area rule is derived on the basis of the asymptotic transonic small-disturbance expansion for slender bodies. Matching of expansions valid in the near-field and the far-field is essential to the result. Some higher order terms in the near-field are calculated in order to apply the momentum theorum consistently. The results agree with those previously obtained that the overall drag is the same as that of a body of revolutions having the same distribution of cross-section area whenever either the body is effectively pointed at the tail; the streamwise rate of change of cross-section is zero at the tail.
