Light Scattering.

Abstract

The work of the laboratory for the past year is very briefly summarized under four headings: Spontaneous scattering in which sound speeds and relaxation effects in gases and polymers are investigated; Stimulated Rayleigh wing scattering in which the effect of absorption upon the observed frequency shifts in nitrobenzene is investigated; Computer solutions have been prepared to predict the thicknesses of thin film coatings as a function of index of refraction and the angle of incidence for which a coated beam-splitter will not effect the polarization of a beam, and, to predict the spectral reflectance of a large number of layers of alternate Hg and SiO films; The emission spectrum of CO from a plasma tube has been observed in electronic bands but the infrared emission is not yet observable.
