Design and Construction of a Photoionization Mass Spectrometer. I. Vacuum System and Safety Interlocks.

Abstract

The report deals with the engineering considerations regarding the rather elaborate vacuum system required to do spectroscopy in the high energy (windowless) vacuum ultraviolet region, and the ancillary protective interlock system which has been designed to forestall damage to the instrument should one of the utilities fail. The specific choices of mechanical and diffusion pumps, baffles, automatic and manual valves, and other components of the several vacuum sub-systems are delineated, and the description of the safety interlock system includes schematic diagrams of the logic and control electronics.
