Improving Air Force Base Refuse Collection Vehicle Routing.

Abstract

A simple methodology is provided for Air Force base civil engineers to improve their solid waste collection systems. The technique presented attempts to route refuse collection vehicles more efficiently than at present. The objective of the methodology is to determine the optimum routing of refuse vehicles through a given network of streets. This objective is achieved by determining the minimum, or near minimum, mileage routes through the given network. By minimizing collection vehicle mileage a sizeable cost savings is expected to occur. The methodology is described briefly and applied to a residential section of Kirtland Air Force Base.
