Comparative Profiles of True Volunteers and Draft Motivated Navymen.

Abstract

The report deals with the differences in values and preferences between true volunteers in the Navy as compared to Navymen who had other reasons for enlisting. The importance of this study lies in the fact that true volunteers will constitute the large proportion of the Navy's manpower in the future. The profile of the true volunteer which emerged was one that showed him to be, on the average, less educated than his draft motivated peers. The true volunteer group, however, exhibited the same preferences and ambitions for upward moving jobs as choice motivated individuals. A dislike for rules, regulations, red tape and being bossed was similarly expressed in the two groups. The Navy must become responsive to these needs and preferences if it is to attract and retain true volunteers. (Modified author abstract)
