Optical Measurements in Fusion Research,

Abstract

Optical diagnostic techniques used to determine the plasma refractive index are discussed. The relationship between the refractive index and the plasma density and magnetic field is established. General interferometric principles are explained and the observable fringe shifts related to the plasma density. Various interferometers producing either space or time resolved density data are described. Schlieren and shadowgraph methods for determining the plasma density gradients are discussed in addition to phase contrast techniques and their application to plasma density determination. The use of Faraday rotation techniques to determine the plasma magnetic field is also considered. (Author)
