Monopropellant Hydrazine Tank Self-Pressurizer Demonstration Program.

Abstract

The Hamilton Standard Division of United Aircraft Corporation has conducted an R and D program whose objective was the feasibility demonstration of a unique propellant tank pressurization concept based on surface tension feed of propellant to a reactor catalyst bed. The effort involved laboratory testing of wicking materials, subscale testing and a full scale breadboard system. A malfunction of the breadboard system occurred during test wherein an internal detonation caused damage to the hardware precluding further experimental activity. Subsequent to this malfunction, the program was redirected to formulate analytical models of the concept in an attempt to obtain better understanding of the physical mechanisms governing concept operation.
