Dislocation Motion and Theoretical Far-Field Source Spectra of Four California Earthquakes.

Abstract

Haskell's moving dislocation model has been applied to interpret the near-field strong-motion accelerograms of the San Fernando earthquake and its first aftershock, the Parkfield earthquake, and the Borrego Mountain earthquake. For the San Fernando earthquake and the Parkfield earthquake, an instantaneous dislocation model is rejected on the basis of the observed strong-motion waveforms. However, the evidence for the San Fernando first aftershock is inadequate to choose between an instantaneous dislocation model and a propagating dislocation model. The estimated dislocation parameters for the near-field observations are then used to predict the far-field P- and S-wave source spectra. (Modified author abstract)
