Laboratory Simulation of a Field Problem in Visual Detection.

Abstract

Twenty-two civilian and military personnel participated in a study to validate the use of a motion picture in visual detection as a means of predicting detection performance in the field, These subjects searched in the field for surface-laid mines in a trail 8-10 feet wide and 200 feet long, and then attempted to find the same mines in a 16MM, color motion picture. The correlation between field detection performance and film detection performance was significant and a filmed detection task appears to be a valid predictor of a similar task in the field.
