Two-Dimensional Spallation Induced by Hypervelocity Impact in Wrought Steel Plate.

Abstract

Experimental results of hypervelocity impact of small nylon and water spheres on wrought steel plate are reported. Measurements of backface bulge height (or spall gap thickness) are shown as a function of impact velocity. An empirical spall damage relation is derived. It is suggested that this be used as a working model for incipient, complete and backface 2-d spall. (Author)
