An Integrated Error Description of Active and Passive Balloon Tracking Systems.

Abstract

TICULAR, THE RAWINSONDE. Certain intrinsic error characteristics of active and passive balloon tracking systems are presented, with consideration given to possible weaknesses of the latter system for many objectives in mesocale variability. Error surfaces are described for vertically consistent fundamental error parameters, and it emerges that the active system has considerable advantages. It is shown that there exist certain objective considerations arising from intrinsic error properties, and which relate to problems of use and placement of passive or active systems. These objective properties should prove of value in determining optimal configurations. The material is essentially descriptive, and is intended to provide a basic framework through which observed characteristics may be explained and additional features predicted.
