Tactical ADP Test Experience Review.

Abstract

The study summarizes lessons learned in the use of tactical automatic data processing equipment (ADPE) in field tests at MASSTER, and proposes an alternative approach to the software design of the future ADPE test bed, the tactical operations system, operable segment (TOS2). MASSTER conducted four major systems tests that required the use of ADPE to satisfy the objectives of each test. The ADPE that was used during these tests was a commercial, contractor-supported, van-mounted, secure system. Each test attempted to use the system according to the TOS concept outlined in the military needs document - a central computer with multiple input-output devices at all echelons down through battalion level and input-only devices at company level. The results reported for each test were not entirely favorable for continued ADP experimentation even though they were qualified in a way that took into consideration the limitations of DEVTOS.
