Investigations of Attenuated Strains of Group a Arboviruses.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is two-fold: First, to isolate a strain of eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus which has lost its virulent characteristics for animals and man but retains its immunogenic properties; and second, to characterize the clone 15 strain of attenuated western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus to determine its suitability as a vaccine for man and animals. EEE and WEE vaccines are necessary in order to immunize researcher and diagnosticians working with these viruses, veterinarians and others working with infected animals and special groups such as military personnel who might be exposed to natural infections because of their assignments in endemic or epidemic areas of viral activity.
