The Effect of Attention Gaining Devices of Film-Mediated Learning (Rapid Mass Learning).

Abstract

Devices which draw attention to particular points in a training film are either relevant (related to the subject matter) or irrelevant (unrelated to the content). The purpose of the study was to determine the relative effectiveness of three levels of attention-gaining devices: relevant, irrelevant, and none, involving three hypotheses. The first was that film-mediated learning will be facilitated by relevant and inhibited by irrelevant devices; the second is that visual or sound devices of the same relevance will facilitate learning equally; the third is that recall of the devices themselves is relatively independent of content learning. Test methodology and results are discussed.
