Comparison of Predicted and Observed Tides at Monterey, California.

Abstract

A comparison of the predicted and observed tides at Monterey, California conducted over the period of a year revealed that the hourly water-level differences did not exceed plus or minus 0.9 feet in magnitude. 263 water-level anomalies of duration up to 362 hours were identified, of which 42 were of duration greater than twelve hours. It was determined that change in atmospheric pressure is the dominant causitive factor of hourly water-level differences and that the water-level response is approximately hydrostatic. The changes in atmospheric pressure associated with the 42 water-level anomalies examined were found to be manifestations of the eastward or westward migration of the isobaric gradient due to either intensification or movement of the quasi-permanent high and low pressure systems in the region.
