Removal of Microcracks of the 'Silver' Type by Surface Thermomechanical Treatment,

Abstract

The work has established that microcracks of the 'silver' type in polymethyl methacrylate are naturally removed during aging at ordinary temperature. These are cracks which have the appearance of silver streaks. The dependence between the number of disappearing microcracks and the time is direct. It was found that the development of microcracks may be related with the structural heterogeneity of the polymethyl methacrylate surface and the presence of stress concentrators localized in the microvolumes, commensurate with supramolecule formations.
