Abrasive Breakdown of Solids,

Abstract

The monograph discusses the laws which govern the interaction of a hard mineral grain on the surface of metals and alloys from the standpoint of various types of alloy strengthening and from the standpoint of the conditions and type of work. A physical interpretation of the abrasive wear process is given, and the characteristics of the material which have an effect on wear resistance are determined. The relativity of the concepts 'abrasive grain capacity' and 'wear resistance of alloys' is proved. The data obtained from an analysis of the abrasive process which is important for understanding the action of regidly fixed abrasive grain are given. Practical results are obtained about ways in which the resistance to wear of the material can be improved through additions and through action on structure of the worn material. (Author)
