An Extended Battle Model for Submarines Versus Naval Task Forces,

Abstract

An extended version of the battle model presented in SACLANTCEN Memorandum SM 11 is described. A limit is imposed on the number of torpedo and missile attacks that a submarine can make. The main outputs are the expected number of submarines sunk or disabled, the expected number of torpedo and missile attacks on main targets, and the probability distribution for this number of attacks. Sub-models are developed for basic battle phases: stochastically generated Poisson or binomial encounters, targets with equal or with different parameters, submarines which carry either missiles or torpedoes or both. Analytical solutions are given for most of the cases. A simpler approxiamte model is also developed. (Author)
