Army Feeding Systems of the Future in Support of a Modern Volunteer Force.

Abstract

The article identifies the basic problem confronting the Army in operating a successful garrison feeding system. The problem is poor attendance due to customer dissatisfaction. The Army is currently feeding less than 50% of all enlisted men authorized to subsist at no expense to themselves in government messes. Related problems in existing feeding systems which contribute to this situation were examined in detail. The problems having the greatest impact on mess operations and feeding systems involve personnel assignments and career management, lack of central control and management, antiquated facilities and equipment, limited research and development programs, customer satisfaction and command interest. Short range and long range solutions are proposed such as a system to provide a Centralized Food Processing Facility, Satellite Dining Halls, and a Central Sanitation Facility. The system can be implemented by using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. (Modified author abstract)
