On-Line Interface for an Activation Analysis System - Hardware and Software.

Abstract

, PDP-8 COMPUTERSA 14-MeV neutron activation analysis system with data accumulated in a scaling array controlled by an Ortec Model 432 Control Print Out Control has been interfaced with a PDP-8 computer for on-line data storage, operator assistance and formatting of the printed output. The report describes the hardware designed to control the counting sequences for standard and unknown samples, and that required to interface to the computer. The software developed to call a selection of programs into the computer, collect, format, and store data, and to view the stored data is described and completely listed. The development of this software system has shown that a minimum of 512 core memory locations are required for exclusive use of the interface for the writing of symbolic language programs with clear conversational text and extensive output formatting, when swapping with magnetic tape is employed.
