Performance Analysis of Digital Radiometers,

Abstract

The work investigates the effects of digital processing in radiometers. It deals mainly with two digital versions of a total power radiometer. The first consists of RF, Mixer and IF sections followed by an analog to digital converter. All further processing is done in a digital computer. The second version consists of RF, Mixer and IF sections followed by a square law detector, RC filter and analog to digital converter. From this point on the processing is done by a digital computer. A figure of merit is defined based on the performance of an analog total power radiometer. Exact results are obtained for the figure of merit of the first digital version. For the second, an approximate solution is obtained. The effects of saturation and finite step size of the quantizer were taken into consideration for the above results. The performance of digital balanced-Dicke and noise-adding radiometers is investigated using the above results. The effects of digital filtering on the performance of a radiometer is considered.
