Application of Fracture Prevention Principles to Aircraft

Abstract

The elements of current fracture control plans and associated technologies were reviewed. After reviewing the status, applicability, and potential of the elements and technologies, it was concluded that fracture control plans and development of related technologies not only afford an opportunity to reduce catastrophic failures of aircraft structures and structural maintenance but also can help to quantify many structural material, design, nondestructive evaluation, and maintenance decisions that now are made on a relatively qualitative basis. The Committee recommended careful trade studies, together with caution and flexibility, in the use of existing criteria and prior to the issuance of new criteria.
