Operant Behavior of Rhesus Monkeys in the Presence of Extremely Low Frequency-Low Intensity Magnetic and Electric Fields: Experiment 2,

Abstract

Consonant with the U.S. Navy's exploration of the biological effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation, the present studies exposed two rhesus monkeys to 10-gauss 45-Hz and 10-Hz fields. Low intensity electric fields occurred simultaneously. No effects of the 45-Hz fields on immediate memory, operant responding, reaction time, or activity were observed. Statistically significant effects were produced by 10-Hz fields, but not in both animals nor in a replication of the experiment. The study failed to provide unequivocal evidence that ELF magnetic and electric fields affect behavior, although weak support for effects of 10-Hz fields on general motor activity was given.
