The Incidence of Myoglobinemia and Exertional Rhabdomyolysis in Marine Recruits.
Abstract
Specimens of blood from 330 Marine recruits at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, were obtained daily during the first week of their recruit training. Each sample was analyzed for serum myoglobin, CPK, GOT and LDH. It was found that 7.9% of those recruits tested had myoglobin and enzyme levels compatible with the diagnosis of subclinical exertional rhabdomyolysis. One recruit had levels as high as those individuals who had been hospitalized with the diagnosis of acute exertional rhabdomyolysis. Ambient noon temperatures during the study were not high nor was salt intake excessive. (Author)
