Phase Detection of Magneto-Optic Magnetization Signals.

Abstract

A method for recording the reversal of magnetization in ferromagnetic specimens by detecting the accompanying phase change of the magneto-optic light component (Kerr or Faraday) is described. The method uses polarized coherent illumination and involves the interference of the reflected (or transmitted) wave and a reference wave. For evaporated magnetic films that are transparently thin, a Twyman-Green interferometer arrangement is described. For thicker magnetic film specimens a technique involving holographic interferometry is employed. The magneto-optic signals accompanying magnetization reversal are observed with the conventional Kerr technique. (Author)
