Development of High-Temperature-Resistant Elastomeric Sealant.

Abstract

A one-year program aimed at synthesizing fluorosilicone-hydrofluorocarbon copolymers is reported. Such copolymers were desired as bases for formulating improved pressure sealants for advanced aircraft. Dehydrofluorination of commercial hydrofluorocarbon polymers (Vitons) is described. Attempts to modify chemically dehydrofluorinated Vitons into intermediates capable of cocuring with commercially available fluorosilicones are discussed. Syntheses of some required silane intermediates are given. Preliminary cocuring studies are presented. Some evidence for formation of hydrofluorocarbon-fluorosilicone copolymers was obtained; however, no materials suitable for sealant use were synthesized. (Author)
