The Significance of the Expanding Soviet Naval Power.

Abstract

The Soviet Union, for a number of years, has been engaged in an intensive seapower expansion program. This section has enabled them to acquire a powerful Navy, a large and modern merchant fleet, and a comprehensive understanding of nautical phenomena. The paper provides an assessment of the significance of the Soviet seapower expansion with emphasis on two key Soviet objectives. To achieve strategic nuclear superiority over the United States; and to acquire the capability to deny the US control of the seas in wartime. (Modified author abstract)
