Lattice Dynamics of Crystal Surfaces

Abstract

The report is a review on surface effects in lattice dynamics. It is directed toward graduate students and research workers interested in the study of solid surfaces. Experimental and theoretical research activity directed toward a better understanding of surfaces has increased remarkably during the past few years. This review will be of interest to those concerned with the vibrational and electronic properties of solid surfaces, physical electronics, surface wave devices, and catalysis. The article surveys advances in acoustical surface waves, optical surface waves, surface wave attenuation, the scattering of particles from solid surfaces, and the effect of surfaces on vibrational contributions to thermodynamic and optical properties.
