Theoretical Analysis of a Series Power Combining Scheme for Microwave Solid-State Amplifiers.

Abstract

P DIRECTIONAL COUPLERS IS DESCRIBED. A scattering matrix analysis has been made to determine the frequency response and power combining loss of an 8:1 combiner using stripline directional couplers. The 1-dBbandwidth of an 8:1 combiner of this type is approximately 28%. The mid-band ohmic and dielectric losses and the power loading on the various terminations of the couplers have also been determined. It has been shown that this type of series combiner has significant advantages over the Wilkenson-type hybrid combiner both in terms of bandwidth and mid-band loss. However, the series combiner has a narrower bandwidth than the binary-type combiner, but permits the power combination of either odd or an even number of devices. The fabrication of the series combiner also appears to be simpler compared to the binary combiner. (Author)
