USAFSAM Whole Body Counter System Radiochemical Determination of Thorium Dioxide.

Abstract

Thorium content of a 72-year-old male patient suffering from aplastic anemia was determined approximately 25 years after a diagnostic procedure utilizing thorotrast. Whole body thorium in the intact patient was determined utilizing the USAFSAM whole body counter. Postmortem thorium determinations were made on whole organs from the same patient, including the spleen, liver, and vertebral bone. The thorium content of the whole body was 574 nc., or about 5.27 gm. The organ content was: liver, 367 nc. or 3.37 gm.; and spleen, 76.1 nc. or 0.70 gm. Bone and marrow content could not be accurately determined with the method used under constraint of nondestructive analysis. From these data, the original injection was calculated to be approximately 43 cc. of thorotrast (5.27 gm. of thorium). (Author)
