Alternative Nuclear Strategies.

Abstract

As the United States finds itself in confrontation with the Soviet Union there is a need to establish a national strategy that will contribute to our defense and allow us to continue to play a role in resolving issues and problems that face the nations of the world. An inherent part of this strategy is the adoption of a particular nuclear posture. Five alternative postures (or strategies) are reviewed: dominance, superiority, assured destruction, damage limitation, and assured survival. A short review of Soviet strategy is included to facilitate an understanding of the interaction of our strategy with theirs. There is also a brief discussion of a mathematical formulation of force level requirements and basic targeting principles. (Modified author abstract)
