Computer-Based Laser Ranging System Study.

Abstract

The report describes the results of a study undertaken to determine the applicability of incorporating a small, scientific, real-time computer into the AFCRL Geodetic Laser Ranging System currently under development. Recommended is a computer-based system in which a small computer maintains control of the data acquisition and processes the raw data, yielding slant range. The system is expandable and ultimately capable of determining aiming and firing parameters for the laser equipment using a short-arc prediction computation. Validation of acquired data is also possible in this expanded configuration. Preliminary specifications for all major system components, including modifications to existent equipments, are developed. Design is carried out in detail only to the point of assurance of feasibility and practicability. Budgetary costs are indicated for the system configurations recommended. (Author)
