Soils at Tambov Station (Pochvy Tambovskogo Statio Statsionara),
Abstract
The Tambov station of the Moscow State University is located in Tambov Oblast, within the boundaries of the so-called central flat forest-steppe region of the Oka-Don Lowland. This region includes the vast territories of the Tambov, Voronezh and Lipetsk Oblasts, occupying an area of more than 18,000 sq km. The topographies similar to the Tambov flatland occur widely in the Dnieper-Don Lowland, Western Siberia, on the plains of Central Europe and North America. Their specific feature is the poor drainage of the watersheds, flat, formed of heavy source rocks and a hydrographic network which is scarcely differentiated. In such watersheds under the effect of ground water occurring near the surface, complex groupings of meadow soils having a varying degree of salinification, chiefly soda and sulfate-soda type, become formed.
