Abstract

In the book, the authors examine the basic tendencies in the occurrence of ice bodies within the confines of individual large regions, the formation and regime of ice bodies, their role in river runoff and significance as an index of underground runoff into rivers, chemistry of subterranean water, built-up ice and efflorescences forming on the naleds' surfaces, and a procedure for the study of naleds (ice bodies). Special attention is directed to the formation conditions of naleds in different regions and under varying conditions, consideration is given to the individual factors determining the nature of naleds' formation conditions; a bibliography of the publications dealing with questions of naled development and anti-icing measures has been included. The book is oriented toward a broad group of hydrologists, hydrogeologists, permafrostologists, geographers and engineering geologists. (Author)
