Computer Science in Japan,

Abstract

During September and October 1972, the writer spent approximately four weeks visiting various Japanese computer scientists and mathematicians and attended the First U.S.A./Japan Computer Conference. This document is partly a report on that trip and partly an attempt at an assessment of the state of the art in various areas of computer science in Japan. Information is incorporated which was gathered on a previous trip to Japan, during the fall of 1971. Also, conversations with various computer scientists in the United States were helpful, particularly a conversation with Dr. Hisashi Wakita of the Speech Communications Research Laboratory, who supplied much of the information reported below on Japanese efforts in speech processing. The trip report was very useful in assessing Japanese efforts in large-scale software systems.
