Chemistry of Fused Salts.

Abstract

The report discusses a research program which has emphasized structural studies in fused salts by means of careful and thorough high temperature measurements of electrical conductance, viscosity, density, and with laser-Raman spectroscopy. The authors directed their attention to basically four problem areas: (i) melting mechanisms of ionic compounds having very large polyatomic cations, (ii) molten salts as ultra-concentrated electrolyte solutions, (iii) structural aspects and Raman spectroscopy and (iv) electrolysis of molten carbonates. The results of their studies in each of these areas are briefly summarized. Significant contributions to new experimental techniques for molten salts studies are also described.
