Deep-Sea Winch Installation Aboard USNS MIZAR.

Abstract

A 75 horsepower electric/hydraulic, deep-sea winch system, which was designed and built at the Naval Research Laboratory, is one of the novel features aboard the famous oceanographic research ship, USNS MIZAR (T-AGOR 11). The winch was built in 1959 as an all-electric, self-contained unit. It was converted to electric/hydraulic drive in 1963, and installed on MIZAR in 1964. This unique installation has enabled ocean scientists, engineers, and technicians to successfully conduct many types of search and research operations at or near the ocean floor.
