Cruise AP-4: Acoustic Investigations in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

Abstract

Bathymetric, magnetic, and XBT data collected along a track from Honolulu to Panama in September-October, 1970 are presented and discussed. An acoustic reverberation experiment has demonstrated the feasibility of locating prominent acoustic reflectors over areas greater than 750,000 sq km. The technique involves cross-correlation analysis of the reverberations from two depth charges. A method is presented for unambiguous location of bathymetric reflectors by analysis of signals from only two standard sonobuoys. The removal of ambiguity is accomplished by developing an internally consistent description of the sonobuoy array spacing and orientation changes caused by small-scale turbulence during the experiment. Recommendations are presented for development of the technique to provide improved coverage and bearing determination. The cross-correlation method is contrasted favorably with other techniques of long-range bathymetric mapping.
