Laser Ignition of Pyrotechnic Compositions Being Tested as Drag-Reducing Fumers.

Abstract

A series of pyrotechnic compositions being considered as drag-reducing fumers was ignited with a 50 watt, continuous, CO2 laser. This provides us with a remote energy source capable of igniting pyrotechnic mixes in wind tunnel studies to assess their effectiveness as fumers, and opens the possibility of studying pyrotechnic ignition using a laser as has recently been done with solid propellants.
