Middle Course II Cratering Series.
Abstract
The MIDDLE COURSE 2 cratering series extended the previous cratering experience in sandstone near Trinidad, Colorado, to obtain a complete set of cratering curves for fully-stemmed 1-ton aluminized ammonium nitrate slurry charges, and investigated the influence of stemming conditions on crater dimensions and collateral explosion effects. Sixteen cratering detonations were performed in all. Five of the charges were detonated in 36-inch-diameter emplacement holes stemmed with water, three were fully stemmed with drill cuttings and gravel, seven were detonated in unstemmed 36-inch holes, and the last charge had a 4-inch unstemmed pole. The optimum depth of burial for fully-stemmed charges of this slurry explosive was determined to be about 18 feet. The apparent crater radius and depth for this depth of burial are about 23 feet and 13 feet, respectively. (Modified author abstract)
