Identification of Hydrogen in Materials by Resonance Detection of Neutrons,

Abstract

-PTR-73-8(*hydrogen, *chemical analysis), (*neutron scattering, hydrogen), cameras, scintillation, elastic scattering, nondestructive testing, californium, neutron counters, fission neutrons, scintillation counters, lithiumAs a first step in the development of techniques for detection of the presence or absence of a hydrogen-containing component in a larger mechanical assembly, resonance detection of elastically-scattered neutrons in hydrogenous materials was explored. A phosphor-photographic film technique was found to be much less satisfactory than a direct counting technique for the scattered neutrons which identified the presence of milligram quantities of hydrogen. Large improvements in sensitivity, compactness, and operator safety can be provided by implementation of further developments detailed in the report. (Author)
