Studies on Systems with Intramolecular Proton Transfer Reactions in the Excited State.

Abstract

The report deals with the photochromic properties of some benzylideneaniline and salicylideneaniline derivatives mainly in the crystalline state or in rigid matrices. Spectroscopic and flash photolysis experiments have been carried out in order to clarify some controversial previous results. In the search for new photochromic materials it was observed that solid benzenesulfonylhydrazones of salicylaldehyde present the phenomena of photochromy which, in the examined cases, are mutually exclusive. It is suggested that photochromy involves an intra-molecular proton shift from the ortho-OH group to the nitrogen of the C=N- group leading to quinoid type molecules. (Modified author abstract)
