The Strategical Importance of the Indian Ocean.

Abstract

The decision of the British government to withdraw its military forces east of the Suez and the subsequent appearance of naval units of the Soviet Union have created a recent interest in the Indian Ocean. Is there a power vacuum in the Indian Ocean. Is the Indian Ocean area of strategical importance. The paper determines the strategical importance of the Indian Ocean area, particularly in light of United States interests. It identifies salient features of the area, its location, resources, trade routes, and islands, its water subareas and their strategical relationship with other oceans and land areas. Relevant interests and activities of the United States and the Soviet Union are surveyed. (Modified author abstract)
