Toward the Development of a Corps of Military Strategists.

Abstract

It has been said that the military has abdicated the field of military strategy to well-qualified professionals in corporate and academic institutions and that the soldier's only expertise in these times when relations among nations are so dominated by political, economic, and technological considerations is in the implementation of policy. The paper discusses the historic sources of military strategy; the nature and sources of military strategy today; the function of the military profession in the formulation of that strategy; the Army career system and its supporting educational program; and recommends ways in which the contribution of the military can be increased.
