The Significance of the NATO AFCENT Communications Zone to the Strategy of Flexible Response.

Abstract

The basic problem is to determine whether there is sufficient depth to the AFCENT COMMZ to support conventional (nonnuclear) warfare should NATO not be permitted to operate in France. The assumption that the AFCENT COMMZ is that area west of the Rhine River, but including the whole of the Netherlands, is necessary to study the problem. Data were gathered using literature search and personal interviews with both allied and US officers familiar with the area and the problem. (Modified author abstract)
