Automatic Data Processing. How Can We Determine Its Readiness for Combat Operations.

Abstract

It is presently impossible to answer the basic question of whether automatic data processing systems are ready for tactical application since no one really knows. No modern large-scale general-purpose digital system has yet been properly evaluated to make this determination although one, TACFIRE, has almost reached that stage. In lieu of providing such an answer, the study addresses the kind of questions which must be answered and uses the example provided by the TACFIRE program to illustrate how the criteria which make up these questions are defined. It also examines several areas in which these techniques of requirement-definition have not been satisfactory, and discusses some of the inovative approaches that have been attempted in their place.
