Hold the High Ground: The AntiROTC Rationale and a Defense for Oncampus ROTC.
Abstract
Despite an AntiROTC rationale charging ROTC programs with irrelevance to institutional purposes, academic incompetence, and general immorality, the overwhelming majority of subscribing institutions continue to support the modern ROTC in concept and substance. In view of general institutional practices in many nonROTC programs, pragmatic academicians recognize such charges as inconsistent special pleadings, however morally motivated, that confuse rather than clarify the critical considerations in the question of whether or not the US should continue to train the bulk of its reserve officers on the civilian college campus. The essay concludes that if the nation is to meet its need for the highest caliber of reserve officer for the rest of this century, it must maintain ROTC programs on the college campus, for that environment is the most effective incentive for attracting quality recruits.
