Seismic Phenomena Connected with Earthquakes and Explosions
Abstract
The research accomplishments during the past reporting period are given in a series of abstracts included in the report Particular emphasis has been placed on the development of source theory and its incorporation into the calculation of synthetic seismograms in the frequency domain. These techniques were used in the first half of the reporting period to determine theoretical M(S) distance corrections; the effect of tectonic regions on the body wave spectra of explosions, and in the evaluation of long period discriminants. This work is being continued and was used to determine the source parameters structure, and attenuation properties of the crust and upper mantle. An improved monopole model of the earth's radial velocity and density variation was obtained by including differential travel times in the set of gross earth data used in the inversion algorithm.
