Comment on the Bending Mode of Al2O.

Abstract

Infrared Spectra were recorded at 4K of samples resulting from the co-deposition of atomic aluminum emanating from an Al2O3 Knudsen cell and 5% O2 in argon mixtures. The spectra exhibited two prominent features, one at 992/cm and one at 496/cm. The 992/cm feature has previously been assigned to Al2O. The 496/cm absorption was shown by means of isotopic labelling studies to arise from a species containing two symmetrically positioned oxygen atoms. This species is tentatively thought to be Al2O2.
