Properties of Endod 'Phytolacca dodecandra;: Pilot-Scale Production and Quantitative Field Evaluation of the Butanol Extract in Ethiopia.

Abstract

Two methods have been developed for concentrating the molluscicidal principle from berries of the plant Endod (Phytolacca dodecandra). Initial water extraction of dried ground berries, followed by butanol extraction of the water extract, proved to be the more practical procedure. Techniques then were developed for separating the aqueous extract from non-defatted ground berries using steam condensation, then concentration in a rotating drum dryer, vacuum distillation, and final evaporation to a low-fat tan Endod powder of high potency. Concurrent agronomic studies are underway to determine distribution of the Endod plant in Ethiopia for the selection of potent, high-yield strains. Potency testing of various strains have already established that considerable variation exists, both of yield and toxicity. (Modified author abstract)
